The abbreviation HVDC stands for High Voltage Direct Current, which is a technology enabling the efficient transmission of large amounts of electrical energy over long distance with minimal losses.
HVDC systems consist of converter stations. Unlike alternating current transmission, it allows the transfer of electricity through direct current lines with very high voltages. Resistors are used in the power electronics inside the converter stations to ensure the safe and efficient conversion and transmission of energy.
HVDC therefore plays an important role in efficient power transmission and is essential for integrating renewable energy sources and connecting distant power grids.
Previously, traditional high-voltage power lines were used for the transmission of energy from the producer to the consumer. At the time, energy loss was insignificant due to the short distance to the customer.
